Mountain Road

Season 1

Between the Mountains and the Sea of Australia's South Coast lies the Illawarra, the coastal region just south of Sydney. Its people have both faced the dangers of the ocean and worked alongside it. Others use the region's water to create with and play in. Yet, alongside the beauty of the water, the threat of climate change soaks the minds of its people. It's a rich, vibrant place rich in characters and stories and we're going to bring some of them to you. This podcast is recorded, edited, mixed and produced by University of Wollongong third year podcasting students and UOWTV.

EP 1 - Flood Rains

Water is at the heart of the Illawarra. The streams run down the escarpment into the ocean and in between the mountains and the sea lies a massive body of water - Lake Illawarra. It's these natural wonders that draw people to live here. But in the floods of 2022, many homes in the Illawarra were damaged. Some clifftop houses are even at risk of falling into the ocean and the marine life is changing due to warming sea temperatures. In this episode we ask what our future will look like in a dangerously warming climate?

EP 2 - Water Colour

The Wollongong region is known for its beautiful coastlines, and this connection to water seems to flow into the region’s creative scene too seeping into the work of local artists and creatives. This episode follows four stories of water and creativity. We hear how different local artists express their connection to water through theatre, sculpture, video and audio, and even a touch of synchronised swimming.

EP 3 - Tasting the Waters

Join us as we find out exactly where in the Illawarra our drinking water comes from. We visit a local brewery that turns water, and a few other vital ingredients, into beer and we ask the question, do we sometimes form a possible unhealthy attachment to the vestibule that holds it.

EP 4 - Ocean Pools

It’s fair to say, Aussie kids are in the water from birth. We learn to swim as babies, we have swimming carnivals all through school we spend our summers at the local pool or at the beach or at the river. Or if you're lucky to grow up in the Illawarra your pool is carved into the rocky platforms of the coastline and filled with salty seawater. This episode follows the rich history of how our ocean pools came to be. We meet the people who swim in them, the team of four who clean them and the creatures and surfers who gather just beyond them
